Drive Thru Director makes "The 25 Most Epic Ads" List!

Here's something we just found:

On May 5th, 2010, AdFreak celebrated, The 25 Most Epic Ads that aren't 1984. This list admires those who went the extra mile and produced a spot that was borderline cinematic. Drive Thru is proud to say that one of our beloved directors, Mike Nelesen, made that list!

Starting off the list at number 25, was Best Buy's Silence is Golden spot that Mike directed back in 2005. This trailer-like commercial served as an effective, yet entertaining reminder for movie goers to switch off their cell phones during the show. Much to the surprise of Best Buy Co. Inc., the "trailer" was a viral hit, attracting 2.7M hits on the website designed to complement the campaign.

A+ for Subaru's Puppy Bowl ad

OK, here's one more story rating Super Bowl ads. U.S. News and World Report gave Subaru an A+ among automotive advertisers for its "dog-tested" series of ads that appeared during the Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl, which ran before the big game on CBS. The creative force behind the ads showing two dogs tooling around town in a Subaru Forester was the Minneapolis agency Carmichael Lynch.

U.S. News noted that the ad rates were considerably cheaper for the Puppy Bowl and that the venue, now in its sixth year, allowed Subaru to target dog owners with the message that their outdoorsy demographic customer would bond with the dogs.

Doritos Super Bowl Spot Was the Most-Watched Ad of All Time

A Doritos commercial featuring two men attacked in a gym for stealing someone else’s Doritos was seen by an estimated 116.2 million viewers last Super Bowl Sunday, making it the most watched television commercial of all time, according to The Nielsen Company. The ad ran in the game’s fourth quarter at 9:30pm ET.

“For an advertiser to make its pitch to more than 116 million viewers at once shows that the Super Bowl remains the single largest television platform for marketers,” said Pat McDonough, senior vice president for insights and analysis at Nielsen. “And with Super Bowl advertisers adding thousands – if not millions – of commercial views through online and social media exposure, they are able to extend their multi-million dollar investments beyond the game itself.”

Audi’s “Green Police” ad earned the title of second most viewed ad with 115.6 million watching. Electronic Arts’ spot for its new game Dante’s Inferno drew 115.1 million.

Focus on the Family’s ad featuring Tim Tebow tied for the least viewed ad of Super Bowl XLIV, despite the heavy pre-game buzz going into the game.

Only paid advertisements were included in the complete list. But Nielsen’s analysis found that the much-discussed 15-second promo for CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman” featuring cameo appearances by Jay Leno and Oprah Winfrey was seen by an estimated 110.4 million viewers.

Until Sunday, the season finale of M*A*S*H in 1983 aired the highest commercial minute, when an estimated 108.9 million viewers watched the second half hour of the program.

The Best and Worst Car Commercials of Super Bowl XLIV

Something was missing at the 2010 Super Bowl. No, it wasn’t the Colts’ defense. It was car ads.

Of course, with the Hyundai's name all over the pregame show, you may not have thought that car commercials were missing. But after a year of dismal sales, you’d think car makers would have hopped on the biggest advertising event of the year.

You’d be wrong. While local affiliates showed some car ads, only five car companies ran national ads during the big game. With such a shallow field, it wasn’t tough to separate the wheat from the chaff. Here’s a rundown of the best and worst car commercials from the 2010 Super Bowl.

Number Six: Dodge’s "Man’s Last Stand"

Grade: D

Before bankruptcy, bailout and mergers with Fiat, the Dodge Charger was supposed to sell itself. When it debuted, the Charger was a throwback to what it meant to be a muscle car: something practical enough for a family, but powerful enough for the drag strip. While the 2010 (or 2009, for that matter) Charger is nothing new, for some reason Dodge felt the need to run a Super Bowl touting it as the cure for all that ails modern manhood. Yawn. Number Five: Volkswagen’s "Punch Dub"

Grade: C+

Punch Buggy is perhaps the greatest car game ever invented. It’s a free ticket for hauling off and slugging your sister, so it’s no surprise that VW resurrected the game for its Super Bowl ad, which showed people fiendishly delighting in punching those around them as VWs passed by.

While the ad was fun, it operated with a revised list of punch buggy rules where any VW qualifies for a punch and seemed to imply that we should all be happy that VW’s model list is longer -- because we’ll all get punched more. Um, yay? Check out the VW Punch Dub commercial

Number Four: Kia’s "Toy Hangover"

Grade: B-

With this slick ad that showed a bunch of toys borrowing the family SUV for a night on the town, Kia effectively marketed the Sorento as a family SUV – without having to shout it from the rooftops. After all, if a sock monkey and Muno can have a good time in a Kia, why couldn’t Mom and Dad? Check out Kia’s Toy Hangover commercial.

Number Three: Audi’s "Green Police"

Grade: B+

Audi’s Super Bowl ad was one that generated almost as much controversy as Tim Tebow’s, but like the Heisman winner’s, Audi’s “Green Police” spot (which used a fictitious environmental police force that unfortunately has the same name as a Nazi police unit) ended up being fairly tame. Still, with a catchy song and a wry look at where eco consciousness can take us -- and how a new Audi A3 TDI can keep you going fast while you’re going green -- the spot should help put Audi on more people’s shopping lists. Number Two: Hyundai’s Brett Favre Ad

Grade: A

Yes, we know Hyundai ran a bunch of commercials during the Super Bowl, but only one was really worth mentioning: the one that showed a locker-room interview with Brett Favre after he’s won the 2020 NFL MVP award. The ad is clever (so are the outtakes you can watch online), poking gentle fun at Favre while also pointing out that if you bought a new Hyundai during the 2010 Super Bowl, its warranty could still be good during the 2020 game. Number One: Subaru’s "Dog Tested"

Grade: A+

Sure, we said only five companies ran Super Bowl commercials, but to get to the best car ad from Super Bowl weekend, you had to flip over to the other big game: Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl. The pint-sized canine gridiron is in its sixth year, and Subaru used the opportunity (and cheaper ad rates) to target dog owners with a clever series of commercials that showed dogs using the Subaru Outback like any human would: going to the drive-through, arguing over radio stations, having a fire drill and losing out on parking spots to cats. The ads worked because Subaru knows its target customers are outdoorsy families who won’t want to leave the family pooch behind. Check out the whole series of Subaru Dog Tested commercials.

Car Maker Courts Canine-Loving Buyers With ASPCA Partnership, Buy on Animal Planet's 'Puppy Bowl' Sunday

LOS ANGELES (AdAge.com) -- To encourage pet owners to drivers its cars, Subaru has gone to the dogs -- literally.

Pups Olive and Zelda showed natural acting abilities during Carmichael Lynch's brisk shoot.

This weekend, the automaker will roll out a series of spots, created with Carmichael Lynch, Minneapolis, featuring all-canine drivers of the Subaru Forester under the tagline "Dog tested. Dog approved." Dogs are shown "driving" and even parallel parking their vehicles to tout Subaru's pup-friendly brand message. The spots will premiere during Animal Planet's "Dogs 101" marathon Saturday, with airings planned for Animal Planet's Sunday telecast of its sixth-annual "Puppy Bowl,"National Geographic's "Dog Whisperer" marathon Feb. 15 and USA's coverage of "The Westminster Dog Show" Feb. 15 and 16. Subaru will also air different versions of the spots on its YouTube channel and on several key websites.

Kevin Mayer, the car maker's director-marketing communications, said about half of Subaru's customers own a pet, and it indexes higher than most car makers with dog owners. At its most recent annual sales event, Share the Love, customers could choose one of five charities to donate $250 of their Subaru purchase. A large percentage of those donations went to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, of which Subaru is an official sponsor. Beginning in 2008, the marketer started running print ads touting its ASPCA partnership that read, "Without dogs, how would you get rid of that new-car smell?"

"We wanted to develop the next stage of that partnership. The idea was to emotionally connect with the customers, so we asked our agency to do something different in a way from the communication we typically have with them," Mr. Mayer said.

The doggie outreach is the latest iteration of the "reverse upfront" integrated-marketing strategy Subaru started two years ago. The company meets with key media partners months before the marketplace formally moves to get first crack at key integrations and sponsorships. Deals with Animal Planet ("Groomer Has It," the "Dogs 101" marathon), Syfy (a co-starring role for the WRX in "Eureka") and History's "Expedition" were inked during that period.

Although many of the partnerships feature specific Subaru vehicles, Mr. Mayer likes to keep a more holistic focus on Subaru's marketing. "Most of what we do is really at the brand level. Forester happens to be the lead vehicle in these [dog] spots, but it's really about the brand and connecting with the consumer to let me know we care about their passion points."

And he's impressed by his latest "stars," pups Olive and Zelda, who showed natural acting abilities during Carmichael Lynch's brisk shoot.

"The dogs were such good stunt dogs and did a lot of the facial expressions just naturally," he said. During one ad, where Zelda attempts to parallel park her Forester on a curb, "she had her tail between her legs. It's as if she knew what was going on."

Marketers gather round dog bowl

Subaru, Hershey and Mars are all preparing big ad buys for Super Bowl weekend -- but you won't find them on CBS.

The marketers are the leading sponsors of this year's sixth annual "Puppy Bowl," airing Sunday at 3 p.m. EST on Animal Planet. Known in pet-owner circles as a fun, furry alternative to the Super Bowl, "Puppy Bowl" is a place for rescue puppies to compete for the title of MVP -- Most Valuable Puppy -- with more marketer involvement than ever this year.

Hershey is sponsoring a Twizzler-branded blimp to shoot the telecast's first-ever aerial footage, as well as a Kit Kat Break during halftime, during which viewers will be entertained by -- what else? -- kitty cats while a referee enjoys the segment's namesake chocolate. Subaru will sponsor the game's "Drive of the Day" as well as appear during several ad breaks featuring its "Dog Tested. Dog Approved" ads. Mars is the game's solo multi-platform sponsor, appearing online at Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl microsite as well as sponsoring the on-air and online "Starting Line-up" segment. Other marketers in this year's game include the American Animal Hospital Association, General Mills and Progressive Auto Insurance.

Sharon O'Sullivan, Animal Planet's senior VP-ad sales, said advertiser demand for this year's event reached an all-time high, to the point where several clients were turned down for on-air buys due to category exclusivity with key sponsors.

"We have become the campy alternative to all the prime-time shows. Advertisers like that it's fun, and there's a great association. It's something that works for them and the consumers," Ms. O'Sullivan said.

While the "Puppy Bowl" hardly pulls Super Bowl-level ratings, it's routinely one of Animal Planet's highest-rated shows of the year, pulling in a collective 7.8 million unique viewers during a February 2009 marathon and 1.1 million viewers during last year's live telecast.

For Hershey, the "Puppy Bowl" represents a more irreverent -- and much cheaper -- alternative to the Super Bowl, which fetched more than $3 million a spot this year. "The commentators within the Twizzlers Blimp are hamsters, so it's a fun, cute way to incorporate a lot of the same energy and excitement that comes along with the Super Bowl and leverage a lot of those fun elements in a way that's relevant to the Puppy Bowl," said Hershey spokeswoman Jody Cook.

Ditto Subaru, which avoided a Super Bowl buy in favor of a more targeted dog-themed ad buy this year across Animal Planet, USA's "Westminster Dog Show" coverage and National Geographic Channel's "Dog Whisperer," among others.

"Our goal is to emotionally connect with our customers rather than all customers, and the Super Bowl is an all-customer type of medium," said Subaru spokeswoman Heather Ward.

Ms. O'Sullivan said the "Puppy Bowl" has helped define Animal Planet even as the network continues a two-year rebranding process to broaden its programming to more reality-based fare in hopes ofattracting a wider audience than just pet owners.

"It's probably the one show still on the air and doing really well for us over the last five years, and the one show where we've innovated the sponsorships that it's something people come to expect from Animal Planet," she said. "It's part of our history, and we see it being a really strong part of our future."

Forget the Super Bowl: Subaru to Air Commercials During Puppy Bowl

Forget advertising during the Super Bowl. Unlike Audi and other automakers, Subaru will spend its advertising money on TV spots during Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl. Yes, the Puppy Bowl. You know, the "game" than puts puppies against each other for the sake of simply being cute. The automaker is the Puppy Bowl's official car sponsor.

At least seven "low cost" commercials will air during the event, Subaru Chief Marketing Officer Tim Mahoney said to Automotive News, and will feature dogs and humans in humorous situations per the "Dog Tested" theme. Each of the canines used in the commercials was from an animal shelter.

Subaru has sponsored the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals since mid last year and thought this was a better way to target another important consumer base while at the same time supporting one of its major partners. Around 200 Subaru dealerships have held pet adoption clinics with more scheduled in 2010.

Do-Groove Campaign for Minn. Weight Loss

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - A New Blue Cross Blue Shield Campaign commercials features six Minnesotans who have lost weight. Samantha Bushendorf's commercial starts to air the week of January 11 -- she is 22 and had been obese all her life.

When she got back from her honeymoon, she looked at her photos and realized she and her husband had to make a lifestyle change. She threw out all the junk food and started to eat fresh food with high fiber and low calories. Then she and her husband joined a gym.

Since weighing 289 pounds nearly two years ago, she's lost 108 pounds and wants to shed about 30 more. The key to keeping it off for her is finding something she could be passionate about. She now loves to mountain bike.

Samantha wants to inspire other Minnesotans to make a resolution to lose weight this year, but more importantly make a lifetime decision to eat right and move more.

"For the new year I think it's funny because I can't find a parking space at my gym right now because everyone is in their making these changes and while that's good, come february I'm going to be able to park in front again, because people drop off and decide not to continue with it," said Bushendorf.

Dr. Marc Manley with Blue Cross Blue Shield says about 60 percent of Minnesotans are obese. Its costing $140 billion dollars in Health care.
